Coronavirus – COVID-19 – Actions we are taking

We are entrusted with providing our customers with safe, clean and reliable water. As California and the nation confront the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, we are responding with a heightened state of operational readiness and delivering 100 percent of our services.

We remain in constant communication with state health officials and are following the California Department of Public Health‘s guidance as it relates to operations and the safety of our employees, customers and members of the public.

COVID-19 testing is now available for everyone at the Grass Valley Veterans Memorial Building! Increased testing allows for a better understanding of COVID-19 in our community. Even without symptoms, testing of all individuals can help identify those who are asymptomatic and may want to take extra precautions to protect others in the community.

Symptomatic or asymptomatic can be tested. People who get tested at these sites will not be charged for the test; for those with insurance, your insurance will be billed, and for those with no insurance, the State will pay for your test.

People at higher risk of getting very sick from COVID-19 are advised to limit outings, avoid gatherings and stay home. This population includes older adults, individuals who have compromised immune systems and individuals who have serious chronic medical conditions like heart disease, diabetes and lung disease.

Our Grass Valley business office has re-opened. Hours are Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, we have new glass partitions to protect the public and district personnel. Also, only two people will be allowed in the lobby at a time.

Customer Service hours also have been restored to normal. The hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday – Friday.

We also provide drop boxes: in Grass Valley – outside the front door of the main business office at 1036 West Main Street. In Placer County, at two locations – outside the gate at the NID North Auburn Water Treatment Plant, 12200 Locksley Lane in North Auburn, or at Safeway, 2500 Bell Road in Auburn (box located near store entry).

Safeguarding our community

For nearly 100 years, NID has kept the water flowing for our community. During this time of uncertainty and as our community takes unprecedented precautions to slow the spread of COVID-19, we at NID vow to keep our vital water delivery system in operation.

Rest assured, our treated water is safe to drink. NID’s treatment processes are specifically designed to protect the public from viruses and harmful bacteria.

Also, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) affirms that the “COVID-19 is a type of virus that is particularly susceptible to disinfection and standard treatment and disinfectant processes are expected to be effective …. Conventional water treatment methods that use filtration and disinfection, such as those in most municipal drinking water systems, should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19.”

Keeping the water flowing – Our water system is critical infrastructure

The NID water delivery system and dam operations are considered ‘critical infrastructures.’ They are functions so essential that our continued operation is required to ensure the security of our region, our economy, and the public’s health and safety.

To that end, our front-line employees will continue to work throughout this public health emergency to ensure our water is treated to high-quality standards and is transported efficiently to you. Also, around-the-clock operations ensure our dams and water supply are managed to continue to meet all of our demands.

We are taking the following precautions:

To help slow the spread of the virus, and limit the risk of our own employees, we are asking employees who have direct customer contact to take social distancing measures, such as avoiding handshakes and reducing interpersonal close contact as much as possible, as well as practicing safe hygiene, including sanitizing their hands frequently and routinely wiping down counters and work spaces to disinfect surfaces.

The boat launches at Scotts Flat and Rollins Lakes are now open to Nevada and Placer County residents.

Campgrounds and day use areas at those lakes remain closed with a plan for reopening July 1, 2020. See the Recreation page announcements for more information.
