   Watershed Stewardship at Scotts Flat

watershed-stewardshipNevada Irrigation District (NID) places a high priority on watershed stewardship. Focused efforts improve the health of watersheds, which are our ultimate source of water. This video details NID projects addressing forest health and fire risk at Scotts Flat Reservoir, situated among the tall pines at the 3100-foot elevation nine miles east of Nevada City.

NID’s Vegetation Management Program

video_veg-mgt_webWith more than 400 miles of canals in Nevada and Placer counties, weed control is a big job for NID boundaries. The District’s integrated program aims to prevent algae and other growth from clogging canals, limiting access and affecting water deliveries.

South Yuba Canal

Combie Reservoir Sediment and Mercury Removal Project

This pilot project will remove and clean approximately 70,000 cubic yards of sediment from Combie Reservoir using an innovative centrifuge process to reduce elemental mercury in the Bear River watershed. The removed sediment will reduce potential human exposure to methylmercury, as well as restore water storage capacity in the reservoir.
